Introducing PBF’s new Business Development Officer, Carly Figgis?

Q: What do you enjoy most about working for PBF?

A: Having a purposeful and meaningful role with like-minded colleagues trying to make a difference in our community and all around us.

Q: What positive change or impact would you like to make at PBF?

A: I would like to help grow our membership base by widening our reach and visibility among the business community so that PBF becomes a household name.

Q: What most surprised you about the impact and incidence of spinal cord injury when you began to learn about this topic?

A: I was shocked to learn how financially, physically and psychologically draining it can be not only for the individual with a spinal cord injury but also the emotional impact it has on the circle of family and friends. I was also surprised how high the incidence of spinal cord injury is nationwide and how high the percentage of falls-related spinal cord injuries is.

Q: Is there a story or event that led you to PBF as an organisation?

A: My brother had a paragliding accident 12 years ago and has been permanently paralysed ever since. I saw firsthand how devastating it has been for him and our family. I would like to reduce the incidence of such injuries and PBF was an obvious choice.

Q: What are your hobbies/what do you get up to outside of work?

A: I like to share my passion for yoga by giving free classes whenever I can. I also participate in sailing regattas, play ultimate frisbee with UWA students and ride my mountain bike whenever I can, including for the Perth Coastal Bike Ride with Katie Stokes and Ebonny McGann.

Q: What is your favourite thing about working for PBF to reduce the impact and incidence of spinal cord injuries?

A: I like to see the impact a PBF presentation makes on attendees when our inspiring and resilient speakers tell their personal story and how they overcame their permanent spinal cord injuries.

Q: What jobs did you have before joining PBF?

A: I managed an interior design and fitout company in the Middle East for 14 years. Previously I opened and managed a business centre in Qatar and was a business development manager in various industries such as online and paper magazine advertising agencies in Morocco and London.

Q: Why did you start working with PBF?

A: To use my business development skills for a cause close to my heart. It makes me feel closer to my brother and my parents who are in France.

Q: Why do you think people should become members of PBF Australia?

A: A spinal cord injury can happen to anyone, anywhere and at any time and the member benefit payment of $250,000 can help with immediate costs and your rehabilitation journey.  Also, becoming a PBF member supports PBF to continue employing and providing education opportunities to people living permanent spinal cord injuries.

Q: Tell us something about yourself that not many people know:

A: I know how to make kickass French crepes on weekends.
